Program Mission
The FamilyLit program aims to ensure that children and families are simultaneously building a "culture of literacy." We do so by supporting adult learners serving as parents or caregivers of children. Specific programs include:
-
- Parent/caregiver education
- Storytime
- Activities that encourage family member interaction
- Book giveaways that help create "home libraries."
Storytime
Storytime is a weekly program, geared toward children 0-5 years old, where adults and children can participate in stories, songs, and crafts together. Our ultimate goal for storytime is for children to gain a love for literacy and the library.
Each storytime has a unique theme that is used to tie the stories, songs and crafts together. We present storytimes each Tuesday and Wednesday at 11:00 am.
Note: Due to the Library being closed for remodeling until March 2025, Storytimes will be held only on Wednesdays at Margie's Book Nook, 722 Main Street, Susanville.
Family Literacy Workshops
Geared toward families with children 0-5 years old, our Family Day workshops, held on either the first or second Saturday of each month, promote family literacy while building social emotional skills. The program consists of storytime, crafts and other activities that complement and reinforce the theme of each event. Families receive free books geared toward the social emotional learning theme of the month which can help create a "home library."
Note: During Library renovations, Family Literacy Workshops will be held at the Susanville United Methodist Church Banquet Hall, 635 Cottage Street, Susanville.

Kids Crafting Day
Held on the third Saturday of each month, our kids crafting day utilizes a wide variety of crafting activities designed to develop your child’s fine motor skills, counting and pattern recognition skills, and identification and use of shapes and colors, and that encourages critical thinking to boost cognitive skills, all of which will benefit your child in later life to grow into well-rounded adults.
Note: Due to the Library being closed for remodeling until at least March 2025, the monthly crafts day will not be held until the library reopens.
